Taufik Hidayat’s strong statement comes from the fact that other clubs have been providing bombastic bonuses to those of their athletes who successfully represented them internationally. And most of these athletes were former top PB SGS stars, such as global Top 10 rankers Anthony Ginting and Fajar Alfian. Taufik’s SGS currently cannot afford to give out bonuses like other clubs. “So it’s not that we do not appreciate our stars, it’s just that we cannot give out bonuses – or at least, not as much as other clubs do. You can’t generalize situations – bonuses are given out according to the ability of each individual club,” he said.

As for leaving to other clubs, Taufik reminds athletes that there are administrative rules to follow. “For example, transfer fees. The amount billed to you will depend on your ranking. If I remember correctly, the lowest transfer cost is IDR 2 billion. Naturally, if your ranking is higher, the bigger the club’s loss if they lose you and the higher the fee that they will impose,” he said. (rp)
