Surabaya student wins Taiwan International Science Fair 2023

Jakarta, IO – Nathania, a student from SMAN 5 Surabaya, East Java, won first prize in the Medicine and Health Science category in the science competition Taiwan International Science Fair (TISF) 2023.

The event was attended by students from 22 countries and Nathania was the only Indonesian student who has ever won the prestigious competition that started six years ago.

Nathania presented her innovation on Moringa leaf extract as antibacterial agent against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Nathania’s work was considered the most innovative. Her research has the potential to develop drugs to fight the deadly pathogen and lower the price which currently cost Rp1.4 million per tablet.

“I researched moringa extract with the support of various journals. It contains flavonoids, saponins and alkoloids that can help fight MRSA,” said Nathania as reported by Sindonews, Thursday (16/2).

Nathania has also won a silver medal at the National Science Fair for Indonesian Adolescents (NASFIA 2022) organized by the Indonesia Scientific Society (ISS) in November 2022. She also participated in the ASEAN Youth Research Innovation Summit (AYRIS) last year. East Java Governnor Khofifah Indar Parawansa commended her achievement. (un)
