Surabaya District Court bans live streaming of Kanjuruhan tragedy trial today

Jakarta, IO – The inaugural trial of the Kanjuruhan stadium riot that killed 135 supporters on October 1, 2022 was held at the Surabaya District Court today, Monday (16/1) with five suspects set to appear, reported CNN Indonesia.

They are Arema FC organizing committee chairman Abdul Haris, security officer Suko Sutrisno, commander of East Java Mobile Brigade Unit’s (Brimob) Company 3 Hasdarmawan, Malang Police head of operations Commissioner Wahyu Setyo Pranoto, and Malang Police Patrol Unit head Bambang Sidik Achmadi.

Hundreds of police personnel were deployed to provide security, some equipped with teargas grenade guns and AK-101 assault rifles. The Surabaya District Court forbade the mass media to live stream the trial which began at 10am WIB.

“This was on the request of the assembly (judges),” said Surabaya District Court spokesperson Suparno. The court also restricted journalists’ access to the courtroom. “Due to space constraint, not all from the press are allowed to enter,” said Suparno. (un)
