Jakarta, IO – The city of Surabaya turns 730 years old on May 31. Nicknamed “the city of heroes”, it will hold a series of interesting events to celebrate its anniversary throughout the month.
Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said the events will include MSME exhibition, cultural festivals, sports and music, reported Tempo.co, Tuesday (2/5).
Eri also asked the community to be involved in the celebration. According to him, mutual cooperation between communities can strengthen relationships among residents of the city.
“The ultimate goal is to build mutual cooperation, harmony in the midst of society,” he said.
The agenda includes Surabaya Shopping Festival across the city’s malls and the Tjap Toenjoengan Night Market at Pakuwon City Mall from May 1-30.
There are also Rujak Uleg Festival at Kembang Jepun or Surabaya Kya-kya Tour on May 6, photo exhibition by Indonesian Photo Journalists at Surabaya Square from May 12-18, “Night at the Museum” at Tugu Pahlawan Surabaya from May 13-14, and Pet Day at Mangrove Medoakan Sawah on May 28.

Also don’t miss the concerts by well-known bands such as Noah and Dewa19 as well as volleyball and rowing championships. Finally, Ruwatan and Wayang (shadow puppet) performance at the Heroes Monument on May 31.
Eri also hopes that the events can attract not just local residents but also foreign tourists so it can bring economic benefits for the city. (un)
