IO, Jakarta – The suicide bombing carried out by two men disguised as online transportation company workers wearing uniform jackets in the Regional Police Headquarters of Medan on Wednesday (13/11/2019) killed both perpetrators and five police officers, and wounded one visitor. Responding to the tragedy, the Speaker of the House (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat – “DPR”) Puan Maharani urges all members of society to remain calm and continue with their daily routines. She also reminds them to remain alert and increase measures to anticipate terrorist attacks. “Fear not, let’s fight them. We anticipate everything and do our daily activities. Let’s not allow them to stop us from ruining our lives,” she stated at Nusantara III Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/11/2019).
Puan stated that anticipating terrorist attacks also requires the participation of the people. It is not for the police and military only. The behavior of terrorists has changed: terror acts are now performed by individuals instead of groups. “In the past, terrorists work in gangs, but now they work individually. Therefore, we must jointly make anticipations for the future to avoid such actions from repeating themselves. After all, we have suffered so many of these actions in critical locations, such as police precincts,” she said.
Puan finally stated that the people must cooperate in improving joint anticipation, as terrorist actions are frequently performed in places that are generally considered to be safe. “Therefore, we need to anticipate things more thoroughly. The people must be trained to spot clues, so that they can report properly whenever they notice anything suspicious,” she said. (Dan)
