Because of insufficient sleep, children tend to become distracted and hyperactive, “This causes them to be misdiagnosed as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), while they actually suffer from OSA. In adults, interrupted and insufficient sleep cause them to become easily emotional and forgetful. Forgetfulness itself is related to sleep structure, which is divided into light sleep, deep sleep, and RAM sleep. Interruptions during deep sleep affect short-term memory, while if this happens during RAM sleep it will adversely affect long-term memory. In other words, forgetfulness is not just caused by dementia, which is memory and judgment loss resulting from brain cell damage. It is also caused by bad sleep.”

Polysomnography (PSG) is the golden standard in OSA diagnosis, and it determines the severity of the disorder. A supplemental test, drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), identifies the level of obstruction suffered by the person when they sleep.

“OSA therapies include the usual lifestyle modifications, medical rehabilitation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and even surgery. All of these measures require the commitment and cooperation of doctors and patients. As with all other diseases, early detection of OSA is extremely important to determine therapy procedures that are required before complications occur,” she concluded. (est)
