Journalist Umamah Nisa revealed that the low level of tolerance is caused by a lack of space for interaction in matters such as information on religious moderation. Megawati, an activist from the People’s Child Advocacy and Education Institute (Lapar), conducted research and found the reality on the ground that schools have yet to consider tolerance and moderation as important issues.

Also in attendance were Religious Affairs Ministry’s Quran education sub-directorate head Dr. Mahrus M.Ag. and Gadjah Mada University’s (UGM) lecturer at the Peace and Conflict Resolution master’s program Dody Wibowo.

Mahrus said it is important to actively practice religious tolerance by raising awareness of and encouraging peaceful coexistence within the framework of unity in diversity. According to him, based on the 2020-24 Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), the government has formulated a mental revolution movement including fostering tolerance in schools through various teacher training programs. Dody agreed that schools are key agents in promoting tolerance by embracing all students, regardless of majority and majority status. (bp)
