Sandiaga Uno tells business people to comply with beach-as-public-area rule

Jakarta, IO – Tourism and creative economy operators who own lodging facilities or business activities on the beach are urged to comply with applicable regulations to ensure public comfort because a beach is designated as a public area.

“We conveyed in this forum that the beach area is a public area. So what needs to be underlined is that investors must still pay attention to beach boundary regulations. There is no such thing as a private beach. Everything is a public area,” said Sandiaga, per Kemenparekraf, Wed (5/6).

This was in response to the dispute that occurred on May 25 between tourists and a hotel in Soba Wawi village, Lamboya district, West Sumba regency.

Sandiaga explained that the rules for ownership and use of beach functions have been strictly regulated in Presidential Decree 51/2016 concerning Beach Boundaries in which a beach is designated as a public area and state-owned land, so it is prohibited to be used as a private area or privatized.

“So we will continue to coordinate, work with the regional governments for awareness raising and for tourism and creative economy operators to provide access for the public. As long as it doesn’t disturb order and security,” said Sandiaga.

He also appealed to stakeholders to continue implementing quality and sustainable tourism, from the management, long-term economics, to preservation of culture and the environment. (bp)
