
Salman Rushdie spent about 10 years under police protection. He lived in hiding after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called for his execution after the 1979 Iranian Revolution because his controversial novel The Satanic Verses was deemed insulting to Islam.
