IO – National Mandate Party (PAN) is rumored to be joining the government coalition. This is a conclusion from the fact that PAN is often seen going back and forth to the State Palace to meet President Joko Widodo. Chairman of the National Mandate Party Zulkifli Hasan claimed that his visits to the Palace was to introduce the new PAN leadership after being installed. “I invited Mr. Jokowi to the inauguration, and it was all arranged. Mr. President was to attend but due to COVID-19 we rearranged the inauguration to be a virtual one,” explained Zulhas at the PAN Central Executives Board (DPP) Office, Jalan Daksa, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Wednesday (07/29/2020).

According to him, he had previously invited President Joko Widodo to come to the leadership inauguration. However, COVID-19 hit, thus canceling inaugurating offline. “Now that I have promised the President I would come to introduce the cadres; the solution is that I come to the palace. However, not everyone could come. There were six of us yesterday: we introduced our new leadership,” he said. Zulhas did not deny the rumor of PAN to be included in Jokowi’s government, but neither did he confirm it. Diplomatically, he said that PAN was a critical partner of the government. “We are a critical partner. That is the most appropriate title,” he uttered at the PAN V Congress at the Claro Hotel, Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi Province, last February.

As is known in the congress, Zulhas said that his party will not join the government coalition and will not stand as an opposition either. “We are not joining, and also not an opposition to the government. I am not a supporter of Jokowi, so it is impossible for us to join. We will just be a critical partner, who can provide solutions to the problems faced by this nation,” said the former Speaker of the Indonesian MPR. (dan)
