Vito Anggarino Damay, Sp.JP(K), M.Kes, AIFO-K, a heart and blood vessel specialist, warns that other than cholesterol level and diabetes, hypertension is the third-biggest cause of heart attack. The 2018 Health Baseline Study shows that 29% of Indonesian adults suffer from hypertension, but only one out three cases are properly diagnosed in general. Hypertension patients are normally unaware that they are under the thrall of “the silent killer”. “As proof, many patients were only aware that they suffer from hypertension when they were checked for Covid-19 vaccination. Hypertension is extremely dangerous – in fact, it can be fatal. Even a 20 point-rise in blood pressure can double the risk for a heart attack. Preventing hypertension is much cheaper than having to undergo a stent operation. You can do this by living a healthy lifestyle and monitoring your blood pressure routinely. For people already suffering from hypertension, there is medicine that they need to take routinely, as well as monitoring their own blood pressure independently, to allow evaluation of the medicine’s efficacy,” dr. Vito said, in the online launching of Huawei Watch Din Jakarta, Monday (29/8/2022).

Adopting a healthy lifestyle from a young age – reducing fat and salt ingestion, maintaining sufficient rest, doing routine exercise, and proper stress management – will help you maintain a healthy heart. “We all need to know our limit and be moderate, especially when exercising. Maintain a maximum heart rate of 70%-85% of 220 minus your age. Other than checking your blood pressure, please also monitor your body’s other vital signs – your breath rate and oxygen saturation rate – to keep healthy,” dr. Vito said.
