Jakarta, IO – Mass rioting in Dogiyai, Central Papua, resulted in 6 offices torched and around 400 residents of Kamu District fleeing to Nabire Regency.
Papua Police spokesperson Chief Commissioner AM Kamal said the riot was triggered by a traffic accident that killed a 5-year-old boy named Noldi Goo. It lasted from Saturday (12/11) to Sunday (13/11) in the morning, reported Kompas on Monday (14/11).
“Residents who were at the scene suddenly run amok and tried to attack the truck driver. The authorities then arrested a truck driver who allegedly run over the boy. However, this failed to calm the emotionally-charged masses. They then set fire to several office buildings, houses and kiosks on Saturday night,” said AM Kamal.
As a result, a number of residents disappeared and a boy named Iqbal died. In addition, a truck driver and a police officer were injured after being attacked by a sharp weapon.
