Retrenchment wave hits 6 companies in Indonesia, sign of economic gloom ahead?

Jakarta, IO – In the last two months, six companies in Indonesia have been laying off their workers. According to a report by Detik on Tuesday (25/10), in the month September the first company to do so was Shopee Indonesia which it attributed to effort to improve operational efficiency.

A few days, Tokocrypto followed suit, laying off 45 out of its 227 employees. Then Indosat Ooredoo Hutchinson (IOH) on September 23. It is not clear how many employees IOH retrenched.

In the month of October, three have been three companies so far. Edutech startup Binar Academy announced the termination of 20 percent of its employees as the company said it is bracing itself for global economic uncertainty in the future.

Then, through its official Instagram account @bananasindonesia, fresh produce delivery app Bananas surprised with the announcement that it will cease operating as its business struggles. Most recently, Grab also announced that it will shut down its GrabKitchen service on December 19.
