IO, Jakarta The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan – “PDIP”) won the majority vote in the 2019 Legislative Elections. This signifies an opportunity for the Coordinating Minister of Human and Cultural Development, Puan Maharani, to be a strong contender for the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia – “DPR RI”) for the 2019-2024 period. The Minister, who is the daughter of PDIP General Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri, admitted in an interview held at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (25/06/2019): “In line with the results of the 2019 Elections, alhamdulillah (praised be Allah) I earned the most votes nationally. Yes, I admit that I might be a strong contender.”

As it is widely known, PDIP earned a total of 27,053,961 votes in the Legislative Elections, or 19.33% of total votes, followed by the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerakan Indonesia Raya – “Gerindra”) in second place with 12.57%. The results of the Legislative Elections have been validated in Decree of the Election Commission (Komisi Pemilihan Umum – “KPU”) Number 135/PL/KPU/V/2019 concerning the Validation of the Results of the Elections of the President and Vice President, of Members of DPR RI, and the Regional House of Representative (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah – “DPRD”) of 2019. The national summary of votes made by KPU includes the 139,971,260 legal votes obtained nationally in 34 provinces and 130 Electoral Committee for Foreign Countries (Panitia Pemilihan Luar Negeri – “PPLN”).

Despite certainty of her being a strong candidate for House Speaker, Puan must still await the blessing of her mother, also PDIP General Chairwoman, Megawati Soekarnoputri. She stated that PDIP decision concerning DPR leadership will be made in September 2019. “We only have one strong candidate, but we are waiting for the decision to be made by the General Chairwoman. We are still waiting for September (2019),” she said.

The possibility that Puan might become Speaker of DPR RI would naturally please Megawati. However, she still needs to discuss things with her party before she determines who will sit in the primary seat in Senayan. Other than discussing DPR leadership, Mega will also need to determine who will become Committee Chairmen. “Because we already have a Law concerning the People’s Consultative Assembly, House of Representatives, Regional House of Representatives, and Regional Representative Council (Undang-undang Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat, Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah, dan Dewan Perwakilan Daerah – “UU MD3”). That’s what we will definitely talk about,” she said.

Other than being a strong candidate for the DPR RI, Puan is also predicted to follow Megawati Soekarnoputri as the next General Chairwoman of PDIP, strongly competing with her half-brother, Chairman of the PDIP’s Central Leadership Council (Dewan Pimpinan Pusat Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan – “DPP PDIP”) in Creative Economy, Prananda Prabowo, and President Joko Widodo.
