Despite having to feel excessive hunger and fatigue in the two- to three-hour journey to the protest site, Alda is resolute not to fail to fast.

“Even in Islam itself, the Battle of Badr was fought during the month of Ramadan. So, fasting is not an obstacle, but a motivation to keep fighting for justice in Indonesia,” she stressed.

Alda takes part in the demonstration because in her view the government policy to increase cooking oil prices has brought difficulty to her mother, a food vendor. Moreover, her mother has urged her to support UBK students in making their aspirations known to the government in the hope that it will listen and act.

“UBK students have made our intention known that will not stop protesting today and will continue our struggle,” she said firmly. (at)
