“Doctors still have a role to play in operations, especially in making decisions on how to operate the robot. They control and move the robot arm in such a way that minimizes tissue trauma. Robotic actions mostly benefit patients by being minimally invasive, causing less blood loss, causing minimal scar tissue, and consequently, allowing the patient to recover faster. Our record is allowing patients to return home within 48 hours after treatment,” dr. Agus said.

This is possible because robotic arms do not have any natural restriction as imposed by human wrists (they can be rotated 360 degrees). This allows subtler, more precise, and more efficient operation. The accompanying 3D screen provides a more accurate view of the field of operation than naked human eyes, allowing doctors more convenience and focus as they perform the more difficult, complex procedures.

Radical prostatectomy with robotic technology is now a standard service in most advanced countries. “A study that compares the results of robotic radical prostatectomy with laparoscopy shows that urine continence and erectile function improved better within three months after an operation using the former. Furthermore, post-operational pain is lower in intensity and duration when we operate with robots, in comparison with traditional open operations and laparoscopies,” dr. Agus enthused. (est)
