IO – General Chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerakan Indonesia Raya – “Gerindra”) Party Prabowo Subianto received a visit from the General Chairman of the (Golongan Karya – “Golkar”) Party, Airlangga Hartarto, on Saturday (13/03/2021) at Hambalang, Bogor.

Airlangga’s entourage included Golkar Party’s General Secretary, Ledwig Paulus, and Golkar elite members Zainudin Amali and Agus Gumiwang. Prabowo Subianto, was accompanied by the Vice Chairman of Gerindra Party’s Guidance Council, Hashim Djojohadikusumo; the Party’s Secretary General, Ahmad Muzani; the Party’s Executive Chairman, Dasco Sufi Ahmad; Party’s General Vice Chairman, Sugiono; Chairman of the Party’s Leadership Council (Dewan Pimpinan Pusat – “DPP”), Prasetyo Hadi; and Chairman of the DPP’s Investment and Capital Market Division, Budisatrio Djiwandono.

Gerindra Secretary General Ahmad Muzani reported that the two discussed various strategic Governmental issues, including geopolitics and other international matters that may affect our national economy and defense. “They agreed that we need to maintain our Free and Active foreign policy, to limit ourselves to politics that prioritizes the national interest, and to preserve the security and stability of our territory,” Muzani stated in writing on Sunday (14/03/2021).

Muzani also mention that the two men also discussed strategies for reviving the economy. Indonesia actually has the potential to become the sixth major economic force in the world, and this potential must be realized despite the pandemic. “The Government’s efforts to mitigate COVID-19 are going in the right direction. Free vaccination can improve mass immunity, which in turn will give hope to the economy. For example, it will gradually improve economic growth and buying power, which are the things that people complain about the most nowadays,” he said.

One move to amass economic power is by ensuring the food estate program planned by President Joko Widodo will be a success. It is an academic backup plan during the pandemic. “If the food estate succeeds,

Indonesia can become an economic giant and COVID-19 management will be much easier in turn. The Indonesian Government and the entirety of the Indonesian citizenry have reached a high point in COVID-19 vaccination, which has been going well and smoothly so far; it is gradually showing results. In other words, we expect better economic growth and dynamics post-COVID-19 vaccination,” he said.

They also discussed a plan for Indonesia to host the 2032 Olympics. They urged Minister of Youth and Sports Zainuddin Amali, who was also present at the meeting, to work hard to win Indonesia’s bid. “The meeting was amiable, but other important issues were discussed. For example, as Prabowo Subianto is the General Chairman of the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (Ikatan Pencak Silat Seluruh Indonesia – “IPSI”) and Airlangga Hartarto is the General Chairman of the Indonesian Wushu Greater Management (Pengurus Besar Wushu Indonesia – “PBWI”), they are both aware of the importance of having Indonesia host the 2032 Olympics,” he said.

Cyrus Network’s founder, Hasan Nasbi A., expressed his delight in seeing the closeness of political elites, as shown in their relaxed and informal meeting. Such meetings strengthen mental and emotional closeness. Even if they go their separate ways in politics, their bond sets the limit to any political disagreement – they would

have agreed not to destroy each other. “When politicos meet, it’s impossible for them not to talk politics. Let alone (whose profession it is): even we non-politicians frequently talk politics when we meet. This is only natural. So even though we don’t know the details of their conversation, they would have touched upon the subject of politics for sure,” he said.

Hasan suspects that the meeting is the initial testing of the waters for Golkar and Gerindra to cooperate for the sake of the 2024 Elections. The two leaders were talking to see how far their visions and ideas mesh. “It can go either way. However, if there are more similarities than differences, such meetings will continue. They will be after as many similarities as possible for the 2024 political year,” he said.

The year 2024 is still a long way off. However, it is only natural for politicians to start talking about things and prepare plans. Airlangga and Prabowo are ministers in Jokowi’s Cabinet, as well as general chairmen of large political parties with the means to support presidential candidates. “Therefore, it is a positive move for them to try things out. Whether they will end up cooperating or competing later, no matter: this relationship will have a more positive impact for Indonesian politics – especially when it is continued with meetings with their respective ‘clans’,” Hasan said.
