PPLN denies obstructing voting process in London

Jakarta, IO – Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) London responded to a viral video which portrayed a group of Indonesian citizens in Great Britain and Ireland were hampered in exercising their right to vote on polling day, Wednesday (14/2).

The voters said they had arrived before 6pm local time, which meant they were still eligible to cast their votes. However, the PPLN personnel did not allow them to enter the polling station (TPS), per Katadata.

PPLN London chair Denny Kurniawan explained that the citizens were not allowed to exercise their right to vote because they were still registered on the permanent voter list (DPT) in their respective hometown.

According to Denny, the opening hours of the voting stations was from 8am to 6pm local time, longer than the time specified in General Elections Commission (KPU) Decree 66/2024 to accommodate prospective voters who were already on the site.

“The system of opening and closing gates and entrances does not affect the voter registration process at the registration desk which continuously collects voter data in the main room until 6pm GMT,” he said.

Denny advised ndonesian citizens to always check their voting eligibility status before visiting the polling station, so that this incident the one in question does not happen again going forward. (un)
