Police explanation on the death of Peruvian student detained in Bali

Jakarta, IO – A transgender student who graduated from Harvard Kennedy School named Rodrigo Ventocilla Ventosilla died while being detained in Bali. The death of the transgender activist raises a lot of speculation, including torture.

Bali Police Department spokesperson Chief Commissioner Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto denied the allegations of torture. “Bali Police chief has vehemently said it’s not true,” said Stefanus, as reported by Sindonews, Friday (26/8).

He explained that the Bali Police had worked according to standard operating procedure in handling the case involving foreign nationals. Stefanus said Rodrigo was arrested by customs officers after he arrived at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on Saturday (6/8) on Qatar Airways QR960 flight around 18.30 WITA. While undergoing an X-ray examination, officers became suspicious of the content of his suitcase.

From the results of the examination, officers found three brownies weighing 231.65 grams contained marijuana. On Monday (8/8) Rodrigo was handed over to the police.
