Jakarta, IO – The perpetrator, a Myanmar citizen identified as RA (24) was arrested at refugee camps in Pidie and Lhokseumawe regencies. He masqueraded as a Rohingya refugee and entered the camps looking for seven “ordered” people to be transported from Aceh to Malaysia, reported CNN Indonesia, Tuesday (28/2).

Pidie Police Chief Imam Asfali said he was arrested after security officers noticed his suspicious actions. After checking the refugee names, they could not find his name on the list.

Imam said RA was tasked with the mission to smuggle Rohingya refugees from Aceh to Malaysia as per the order of his Malaysian agent. Upon arrival in Aceh, he contacted a refugee in the camp and hatched a plan.

Imam also revealed that RA was working with a local who provided him a vehicle and driver for a trip to Medan.

“We have handed over the perpetrator to the Immigration office so further investigations can be carried out to learn more about the Rohingya smuggling networks,” said Imam. (un)
