PNGDF personnel allegedly shoots Indonesia fisherman, MOFA demands investigation


Jakarta, IO – The Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF) personnel is accused of shooting a fishing boat from Merauke, Papua that entered its waters.

Based on the initial report received on August 22, three Indonesian fishing boats were spotted catching fishes in Papua New Guinea waters—two boats were caught and one tried to escape but PNGDF personnel opened fire and a fishermen named Sugeng was fatally shot.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) demands a thorough investigation into the shooting incident. MOFA summoned ad interim Charge d’Affaires of the Papua New Guinea Embassy in Jakarta on Wednesday (24/8).

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands an explanation from the Papua New Guinea government for the shooting incident and asks for a thorough investigation and strict punishment if violation of procedures is found, including the possibility of excessive use of force,” said Director for Protection for Indonesian Citizens Judha Nugraha in a media briefing on Thursday (25/8).

MOFA also requested information from the Papua New Guinean authorities concerning the detention of the other two ships, namely KMN Arsila 77 with seven crew members and KMN Baraka Paris with six crew members.
