IO, Jakarta – The Democratic Party of Indonesia’s Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan – “PDIP”) held a National Workshop (Rapat Kerja Nasional – “Rakernas”) to discuss preparations for PDIP National Congress V, in a closed-door meeting.  PDIP General Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri was seen leaving the PDIP Central Leadership Council (Dewan Pimpinan Pusat PDIP – “DPP PDIP”)’s Office with a smile, accompanied by PDIP General Secretary Hasto Kristiyanto, PDIP Vice Secretary General Eriko Sotarduga, PDIP General Treasurer Olly Dondokambey, and her son, the Chairman of DPP PDIP for Creative Economics, Prananda Prabowo. We attempted to secure a comment from Megawati, but she only smiled and continued her way to her car, pausing only to discuss something with Prananda, while the other DPP members stood by listening. Prananda and the other DPP members then excused themselves and went back to the elevator.

Deactivated DPP PDIP Chairwoman for Politics and Security Puan Maharani was nowhere to be seen. The official Twitter account of the Party, @PDIP_Perjuangan, has uploaded photos of Rakernas participants. The only persons present were President Joko Widodo, seated at the center between Megawati and Prananda, and all DPP members.

“We haven’t discussed the structure yet. Any information will be issued by the Party’s Spokesman, wherein I, as the General Secretary, am also appointed for it,” Hasto stated at the DPP PDIP Office, Jalan Diponegoro, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (19/06/2019). He reiterates that all discussions of new organizational structure would only be made at the PDIP Congress V, which is to be held on 8th August 2019 in Bali. “We are still discussing the internal agenda. We have not discussed structure, as it will be discussed later in the Congress.”

Senior PDIP member Pramono Anung confirms that there will be new positions created in PDIP, i.e. the Daily Chairman and the Vice General Chairman. These positions will be discussed in full in Congress V. “Secondly, we do have plans for creating the Daily Chairman as well as the Vice General Chairman. However, the mechanism will be fully left to the Congress,” he said.

Pramono further stated that the creation of these two positions require amendments to the Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association, which will also be discussed during the Congress. “The Articles of Association and the Memorandum of Association will be decided in the Party’s next Congress. And that is only a small part of the decisions to be made if we really are going to create the positions of Daily Chairman and Vice General Chairman,” he said.

However, Pramono declined to admit who the potential candidates for the new Daily Chairman and Vice General Chairman of PDIP are. He merely stated that there are some strong candidates discovered. “Yes, we have several names on the roll,” he said.

On the other hand, Hasto Kristiyanto stated that Party members still want Megawati Soekarnoputri  to lead PDIP.  “We hear the aspiration of the PDIP’s Regional Leadership Council (Dewan Pimpinan Daerah PDI Perjuangan – “DPD PDIP”) Chairmen who pleads the General Chairwoman to continue her leadership of PDI Perjuangan. This is the voice of the majority,” he said.

Hasto stated that this aspiration would naturally be heard. He further stated that this is what differentiates PDIP from other political parties. “What differentiates PDIP Perjuangan from other Parties is that our Congress Participants are also representatives of the members. They carry a mandate from the masses. This is what we listen to. Therefore, the basic preparation for the Congress is how the PDIP listen to this aspiration. In other words, we do not merely parrot the democratic models of other countries,” he said.

Hasto stated that Megawati is a figure who has steadfastly maintained PDIP’s ideology during her leadership. However, PDIP remains open to the candidacy of other members. “The Party keeps all of its political senses open. However, we believe that Bu Mega’s leadership is objective. She has been steadfast in her defense of the Pancasila ideology, and it has been proven that the people accept Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri’s leadership by ensuring that PDI Perjuangan win the election twice in a row,” he said.
