IO – Film director Nia Dinata is working on the film Turut Berduka Cita (“Please Accept Our Condolences”) in collaboration with WeTV.

This series stars a number of famous artists, such as Luna Maya, Oka Antara, Ersa Mayori and Atiqa Hasiholan.

In the series, Nia Dinata also served as a screenwriter. “Indeed, the title is because the story begins with the death of Ersa, Luna, and Oka’s father,” said Nia Dinata at a press conference in South Jakarta, Wednesday, 26 January.

Comedy nuances can be enjoyed through jokes and laughter in the midst of the grief felt by the characters in the story. “Because we’ve all experienced when a family member, especially an elder, dies, then we get together sadly, but in the end, we also have to accept sincerity and end up laughing too,” said Nia.

The series is just starting its production process and will be broadcast on streaming service WeTV.

The choice of the stars is not only because of their big names. “The most important thing is that they can represent the characters in the film,” she said.

Nia praised the acting skills of the players and said they had great chemistry. The beginning of Nia’s director career departed from making video clips and advertising films. In early 2000, Nia founded the independent film company Kalyana Shira Film. She then became the director of the film Ca Bau Kan (2002) which was adapted from the novel of the same name by novelist Remy Sylado. The setting of the story takes place in the 1930s, telling the story of a Chinese warrior character. This film received various awards from various international festivals.

In 2004, he directed the film Arisan! very successful in terms of brisk sales and favorable critical comments. This film received many awards, including from the Indonesian Film Festival and the MTV Movie Awards. The next work that also received praise from film critics was Berbagi Suami (Share Husband), a film that discusses polygamy in three segments, and involves many veteran film/theater players, such as Ria Irawan, Jajang C. Noer, and Tio Pakusadewo.

Apart from being a film director, Nia has also been involved in the world of dance. One of her career moves in the field of dance was when she collaborated with dance maestro Tom Ibnur, where Nia wrote the script for the Padusi dance which depicts the legend of Minangkabau women. The work, which involved big names, such as Ine Febriyanti, Jajang C. Noer, Niniek L. Karim, Arswendy Nasution and Marissa Anita, as well as 50 dancers and musicians directed by Rama Soeprapto, was then staged at the Jakarta Theater, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. (rp)
