IO, Jakarta – When tasked with the duty to improve the participation of domestic defense in the procurement of primary weaponry equipment (alat utama sistem persenjataan – “alutsista”), Minister of Defense and Security Prabowo Subianto and his Deputy Wahyu Sakti Trenggono invited domestic defense and security devices and equipment (alat peralatan pertahanan dan keamanan – “alpalhankam”) manufacturers under the auspices of the National Private Defense and Security Tools and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (Perkumpulan Industri Alpalhankam Swasta Nasional – “Pinhantanas”) to discuss how best to address the issue and exhibit their current abilities.

24 domestic alpalhankam enterprises exhibited domestic-production alutsista in the “Intent of the Domestic Defense Industry to Support the Establishment of Indonesia’s Defense and Security Power” exhibition held on the grounds of the Ministry of Defense and Security on Tuesday (03/12/2019). After opening the exhibition, Prabowo visited each alpalhankam manufacturers’ booths individually, having short chats with them and tried out some of the alutsista that they have produced. “I am very proud of their ability. We already have such good abilities – this is something to be proud of,” he said.

This exhibition would naturally help the Minister of Defense and Security and his Deputy improve the contribution of private domestic defense and security businesses. “Alhamdulillah, Praised Be Allah, our abilities are excellent and highly advanced. I am optimistic that we will achieve military production independence in 5 years. I am proud that we have this ability now,” he said.

Other than high officials of the Ministry of Defense and Security and high officers of the TNI, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia – “DPR RI”)’s Commission I and several of Commission I members, high officers of the Police, high official of relevant agencies, and the Defense Attachés of several friendly countries were also present.

At this opportunity, Prabowo stated that Indonesia’s defense and security budget is smallest in comparison with that of immediately neighboring countries at less than 1% of our GDP. “Only 0.8%, while some of our neighbors set their budget at 2%, 3% of their GDP. I am currently striving to get our budget increased in order to guarantee our sovereignty, protect our territory from attack, and secure our wealth from being stolen by other nations,” he said.
