Mutilation in Papua, Military Police to detain four soldiers for 20 days

Jakarta, IO – Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Tatang Subarna said currently a team of investigators from the Military Police have detained six soldiers for their suspected involvement in the murder and mutilation of four civilians in Mimika regency, Papua.

“The temporary detention of the suspects for 20 days is to facilitate the investigation. Currently they are detained in the Mimika Military Police Detachment XVII/C starting from Monday, August 29 to September 17,” said Tatang in an official statement on Wednesday (31/8).

Tatang explained that the six suspects consisted of one soldier ranked major, one captain, one chief private and three first class private, all of them from the Infantry Brigade 20/IJK/3 of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) unit.

He also emphasized that in this case, the Indonesian Army will take serious action and impose severe sanctions against the perpetrators in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. (rr)
