Jakarta, IO – The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) revoked the Provisional People’s Consultative Assembly (TAP MPRS) Number XXXIII/1967 on Sukarno’s involvement in the 1965 tragedy, accusing him of treason. The decision was submitted to Sukarno’s family and the law and human rights minister, as per Katadata, Mon (9/9).
MPR speaker Bambang Soesatyo explained that he received a letter from the law and human rights minister regarding the follow-up to the invalidity of TAP MPRS XXXIII/1967. After holding a meeting on August 23, the MPR leadership decided to grant the request.
“In accordance with the results of the MPR leadership meeting decision that has been signed by 10 MPR leaders, we have agreed to officially respond to the institutionalization of the Law and Human Rights ministerial letter,” said Bambang.
In addition, Bambang considered that the revocation will not create psychological and political problems related to the accusations, one being that Sukarno issued the policies that supported the abortive September 30, 1965 coup, which was blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). The incident, popularly known as G30S/PKI, led to the systematic murder of up to 1.2 million suspected communists as part of the widespread anti-communist campaign.
Bambang explained that based on history, legally the accusations against Sukarno was never proven in a court of law.

“In the future, no citizen of our country, especially if he is a national leader, must undergo any punishment without a fair and just trial,” he said.
The decision was personally received by Soekarno’s children, namely Guntur Soekarnoputra, Megawati Soekarnoputri, Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, and Guruh Soekarnoputra. (un)
