Mount Merapi volcanic activity still high, alert status maintained

Jakarta, IO – The status of Mount Merapi, one of the world’s most active volcanoes situated at the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, is still maintained at Level III (Siaga), the second highest level.

The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) noted that volcanic activity in the form of hot clouds spew has occurred 60 times as of Monday (13/3), said BPPTKG head Agus Budi Santoso, reported CNN Indonesia, Monday (13/3).

The latest activity was seen at 11.26 a.m. WIB when the hot clouds slid down 1,500 meters to the southwest of Bebeng River. Aerial image shows that today’s hot clouds reached 3.7 km from the summit.

He urged all residents to be vigilant of potential hazards in the form of volcanic avalanches at several sites, namely Woro River, Gendol River, Boyong River and Bedog River. “Meanwhile, the pyroclastic flow can reach a radius of 3 km from the summit,” explained Agus. The ash covered houses and roads at villages near the volcano.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said. The public is advised to stop any activities in the potential danger zones. (bp)
