Monas to host first outdoor classical music concert

IO – The National Monument (Monas) Courtyard will be an open stage for a classical music concert. It is planned that the location of the concert will be in the Southeast Field of Monas Cross, Central Jakarta on Sunday, September 8, 2019. The concert will be titled “The Great Monas Concert” with the theme “Jakarta Cheers!!” and start at 18:30 WIB.

“We hope this will be the first classical music concert outdoors. The event will be free for the public to enjoy beautiful music,” said Great Monas Concert Committee Chairman Timothy Siddik during a press conference on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

The concert will be performed by Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra (JSO) and Jakarta Oratorio Society (JOS). Arias performed will include that of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Strauss, Franz von Suppé, Gioachino Antonio Rossini, and Ludwig van Beethoven. The composition from Beethoven which will be played is Symphony Number 9 -Movement IV – Ode to Joy.

Classical music concerts in Indonesia are usually performed indoors. However, this time, the concert will be played in an open space. “Our goal is to introduce good music to the citizens of Jakarta. A momentum to start something good, specifically quality music,” he said.

Timothy explained that classical music concerts overseas are frequently performed outdoors. He gave the example of outdoor classical music concerts performed in Central Park, New York. Other included in Hollywood, Los Angeles. In Berlin, classical music is played in Gendarmenmarkt and Waldbühne. In Southeast Asia, Singapore also often holds classical music concerts in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. (nhn)
