The fertilizer processing facilities will be built inside the Del Institute of Technology Campus on top of approximately 1,000m², which will include processing, storage and transportation areas. “The construction of the plant will be divided into two stages, solid and liquid fertilizer. All these production processes will be carried within the campus area and supervised by Del Institute of Technology,” explained Johan.

The plant will be capable of processing water hyacinth into solid fertilizer using 40 tower composters with a volume of 500 kg/composter and a composting time of 20 days. Meanwhile, liquid fertilizer processing uses tool developed from a digester prototype for liquid fertilizer processing which was previously used as a research tool at the Del Institute of Technology. The equipment consists a 2-ton feed tank, two 2-ton bioreactors, a gravity concentrate, a 500-kg mixing tank and a 2-ton storage tank.

“The need is 1.1 tons/day, to produce 1 ton/day of solid fertilizer around 20-25 liters of fertilizer is need per day,” said Del Institute of Technology rector Dr. Arnaldo Marulitua Sinaga, ST., M.InfoTech.

“Hopefully this project will be a solution to the problems facing Lake Toba and at the same time overcome the shortage of fertilizer affecting farmers. And we also hope that this will be a pilot project whose success can be duplicated in other lakes,” concluded Johan.
