During Ramadan, fasting is not a reason to stop exercising. “Doing sports during the fasting months maintains the body’s health and fitness. It is an important moment to start new routines and habits, including sports, that will improve your health levels. When fasting, you have three options in terms of the time that you will use to do sports in: in the morning, after doing Subuh or dawn prayers; in late afternoon, as you wait for dusk to break your fast; or after the evening Tarawih prayers. Keep it light and according to your personal needs,” dr. Michael said.

Separately, in a live IG session themed “Remaining Active while Successfully Performing Holy Fasting Rituals” held on Tuesday (05/04/2022), dr. Rezky Achman Isdyanta, Sp.KFR. of Persahabatan General Central Hospital Jakarta, states that fasting need not get in the way of carry on with sports. However, he is aware that there are many complaints that disturb us when doing sports while fasting, including exhaustion, weakness, or cold sweat. “In the early days of fasting, the body is adjusting to changes in eating and sleeping patterns. This is normal. We only need to adjust the intensity and do it lighter. For example, take short walks, then increase the intensity gradually. Keep with the principle of ‘start low, go slow’ as you do 20-30 minutes of light sports to gauge your ability – does it exhaust you or not. If you are already actively doing sports before fasting, you need only reduce the duration of your exercises, for example from one hour to half an hour. Maintain your will in order to get the optimum benefit of healthy sports,” dr. Rezky said. (est)
