He served as Director General of Foreign Economic Relations at the Foreign Ministry from 2000 to 2002 then as Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa at the Foreign Ministry from 2002 to 2004.
Since 2009, Makarim has been an adviser to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). Currently, he is leading the PPHAM team formed by President Joko Widodo through Presidential Decree (Keppres) 17/2022 signed on August 26.
