MACAN museum, an artsy destination for painting and installation arts

“As part of its mission, this museum will become an important platform for national and international artists to present their work to a global audience, as well as initiate commission work from various artists to broaden the perspective of contemporary art within and outside Indonesia,” it stated on its website museummacan.org.

This was evident when Observerid.com visited the museum some time ago. Upon entering the area, visitors are greeted by rows of Indonesian themed paintings. One of the most notable is the painting entitled ‘Bung Karno in the Middle of the Revolution’ painted in 1966 by Dullah, an artist who really also admired Soekarno.

Another installation art is called ‘Multiverse and Futures’ by Olafur Eliasson, a Danish artist. It is shaped in the form of four binoculars-like optical devices called the kaleidoscope. It is made of stainless steel with different shapes — triangular, quadrangular and hexagonal.

MACAN’s rich collection doesn’t end there. Further inside the museum, visitors will find an exhibition called ‘Present Continuous’. This is a collaborative project in response to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a manifestation of the thoughts which envision a variety of new ways to bring together artists and audiences with all the challenges posed by technology and geography in Indonesia.
