Litbang Kompas: Quality of Indonesia’s democracy deteriorates

Jakarta, IO – A recent survey by Litbang Kompas found that the majority of respondents considered the quality of democracy in Indonesia to be declining.

The survey, which involved 504 respondents from 34 provinces, gives a snapshot of the state of Indonesia’s democracy in 2021 and 2022. Conducted from September 6-9, the majority (37.7 percent) of respondents views the quality of democracy in Indonesia this year as worse than a year ago, CNN Indonesia reported on Monday (19/9).

Meanwhile, 23.2 percent of respondents said it is as good as last year, 20.3 percent said it is better, 13.9 percent said it is equally bad and 4.9 percent said they did not know. Asked about the cause, 43.2 percent of respondents gave corruption as the answer, followed by 21.8 percent who pointed to economic downturn and 21.5 percent lamented about inequality before the law.
