East Java Cultural Heritage Preservation Center director Andi Muhammad Said argued that Fort Pendem is a clear proof of the Dutch’s intention to completely conquer Indonesia. The fort is also equipped with sophisticated drainage system which regulates the disposal of waste water and clean water.

“The drainage system is meticulously designed to prevent stagnant water and keep the fort and its surrounding dry so as not to disrupt the daily lives of the inhabitants,” said Said.

There are dozens of buildings within the fort. Each of them has their own drainage which merges into a large “dome.” According to Said, this shows that the Dutch are master at water management, as their own country lies below sea level. (rr)
