Largest rail coach factory Southeast Asia begins operations

Jakarta, IO – PT Steadler INKA Indonesia (SII), in Banyuwangi, began operations in mid-March 2023. According to Banyuwangikab.go.id, Thursday (23/3), the factory is located in Kalipuro district, Banyuwangi regency, East Java. It was inaugurated by Deputy SOE Minister Kartika Wiryoadmojo.

Kartika revealed that Banyuwangi was chosen due to its strategic position near the port and station, thus making it easier logistics-wise. “In addition, Banyuwangi is also known to support the development of the businesses to create jobs,” said Kartika.

State-owned train manufacturer PT INKA President Director Eko Purwanto said the factory will be equipped with state-of-the-art production facilities to be built in stages. PT INKA and state-owned railway operator PT KAI have also signed a number of contracts for train procurement, including 16 new commuter rail trains (KRL), 612 SS New Generation coaches for the 2023-26 overhaul program, and 10 luxury coaches.

There were also contracts for the procurement of passenger trains and KRLs between PT INKA (Persero), PT KAI (Persero) and commuter line service operator PT KCI worth around Rp9 trillion.

To meet the needs for workers, PT. INKA is cooperating with Banyuwangi Vocational Training Center (BLK) to empower the local community through a coach-making workshop program. Banyuwangi Deputy Regent Sugirah welcomed the program and hoped that the workshop will create jobs and drive the local economy. (un)
