KPK nabs Unila rector accepting bribe for university admission

Jakarta, IO – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Friday (19/8) caught University of Lampung (Unila) rector Karomani red handed for allegedly accepting bribe in admission process for the 2022 academic year.

KPK deputy chair Nurul Ghufron revealed that Karomani received up to Rp5 billion to help prospective students secure seats at the university through the independent pathway scheme, Tempo reported on Monday (22/8).

“Some of the bribe money was deposited at bank and used to buy gold bars,” said Ghufron.

Karomani, appointed Unila rector for the 2020-24 term, has the authority to influence the selection process. To increase their chance of being accepted, students were asked to pay certain amount of money, ranging from Rp100 million to Rp350 million in addition to the official sum.

Other than Karomani, KPK has also detained other suspects: vice rector for academic affairs Heryandi, chair of the university senate Muhammad Basri and an individual identified as AD who gave the bribe. (rr)
