Jakarta, IO – The commitment of the Yogyakarta City Cultural Agency to preserving cultural heritage is expressed through the Kotabaru Heritage Film Festival (KHFF) which will run from August 9-11 at Grha and Lapangan SMA 3 Yogyakarta.
Held annually in the Kotabaru Cultural Heritage Area in Yogyakarta City, KHFF is an important platform in Yogyakarta City, a meeting point for celebrating cultural heritage through film. This festival is designed in such a way as to shape the perception of present and future society through relics and archives from the past.
Successfully held in 2023, it targets not only film lovers, but also the general public with entertainment that take them down the memory lanes toward the period between 1960s and 1980s. It features film screenings and competitions, film story exhibition “Sinema Berlabuh di Jogja”, Pasar Kobar, Sinema Berdansa, public lectures and workshops.
“Cultural heritage is like a baton between generations, some are well-preserved while many are not. Films play an important role in maintaining and raising awareness of the importance of cultural heritage. Through film, this preservation effort not only strengthens the bond between the present and the future, but also forms a collective memory legacy,” said Yetti Martanti, head of Yogyakarta Cultural Agency.

KHFF shortlisted 171 films for various screening programs including competitions. Participants included students, the general public, and local governments from all over Indonesia. This year, KHFF also collaborated internationally with the Thai Film Archive to enrich the perspective of cultural heritage from the Asian region.
Each selected film offers a unique view of cultural heritage. From all the submitted works, we learned a valuable lesson: cultural heritage never grows in isolation, but always develops through openness and interaction. (des)
