Komnas HAM supports designation of enhanced combat alert status in Papua

Jakarta, IO – The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has responded to an increase in the status of the TNI’s operation to combat alert in certain areas in Papua. Komnas HAM chairman Atnike Nova Sigiro said she supports TNI efforts to free captured Susi Air pilot Philip Marthen.

However, she advised TNI and Polri to continue taking cautious steps and proportional use of force in order to prevent further escalation and more casualties. In addition, she encourages that law enforcement actions be taken against all parties responsible for acts of violence in Papua, including the Free Papua Organization (OPM) and TNI personnel.

Komnas HAM also urged the central government and regional administrations along with TNI and Polri to guarantee the safety of civil society who are directly affected.

“All parties should exercise restraint in responding to the situation in Papua,” she said.

Previously, TNI Commander Adm. Yudo Margono raised the status of TNI operations in Nduga to combat alert after 36 TNI soldiers were attacked by Papua Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Mugi District, Nduga Regency, Papua Highlands Province. This resulted in the death of First Private Miftahul Arifin on Saturday (15/4).

“We are still carrying out law enforcement operations using a soft approach, but of course with situations like this, we will raise the combat alert status in certain areas,” he said on Tuesday (18/4). (rr)
