Dedi also denied the police arrested people who uploaded videos of the riot. He assured that based on information from the investigation team and the East Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Nico Afinta, no arrests were made.

A number of soldiers were also said to be involved in the riots. TNI Commander Gen. Andika Perkasa said that one of the five soldiers being investigated didn’t confess to wrongdoing despite the it being backed by preliminary evidence.

Andika revealed that four of the soldiers being examined are second sergeants and one first class private.

Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam said the commission found indications that many 131 victims died from tear gas. Anam said they found similar type of wound on many bodies, namely bluish colour to the skin on face. He suspected it was caused by lack of oxygen due to exposure to tear gas. (un)
