Jakarta, IO – The Manpower Ministry (Kemnaker) revealed that almost one million workers were laid off in 2022. Spokesperson Chairul Fadhly said the data is based on the number of claims made to BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Workers Social Security Agency) as of December 2022.

“Many workers withdrew their retirement savings (JHT) because they were laid off,” said Chairul, reported Detik, Tuesday (14/2).

However, Chairul pointed out that there a discrepancy between BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s and Kemnaker’s own data which only recorded 25,114 jobless people.

“The data on the Manpower Ministry’s website were gathered from regional offices,” he explained. He presumed many companies have yet to report retrenchments to the ministry.
