Jakarta, IO – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) instructed the Immigration Directorate General to revamp the service for foreign nationals who apply for visas on arrival (VoA) and temporary stay permits (Kitas). According to the president, there have been many complaints.

“I have heard complaints from many investors or tourists, those who wish to apply for stay permits. I think the Immigration is still too regulating and controlling. This creates hassle. This must be completely changed. The mindset should be to facilitate and serve. If we want investment, tourists to come, this must change,” said Jokowi on Monday (12/9).

Jokowi said in the process of granting visas or Kitas to investors, the amount of investment, the number of jobs created, to the contribution to the economy and national exports should also be considered. He pointed to a number of countries that facilitate visas and residence permits for foreign nationals who made an investment or possess special skills.

Thus, Jokowi wants to make sure that immigration service is more hospitable. Visas and Kitas application and approval should take into account the benefits they can deliver to the Indonesian people. The “old style” and excessive red tape must be abolished, he said.
