IO – In his offcial Twitter account, President Joko Widodo, better known
as Jokowi, expressed his appreciation for the progress of defense cooperation between Indonesia and France when meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G-20 Summit in Rome, Saturday (10/30/2021).

The President’s remark refers to the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) signed by the Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and the French Defense Minister Florence Parly in Paris, June 28, 2021. The
partnership is a continuation of their second meeting in January 2020.

In the meeting, MoD Prabowo said that the DCA serves as an umbrella
for comprehensive defense cooperation between Indonesia and France,
one that will bring mutual benefts in many areas of interest for both countries.

The agreement covers areas of intelligence, military training and education, science and technology, defense industry, peacekeeping corps, counter-terrorism, defense industry research and development and joint production. The agreement also includes humanitarian assistance and
disasters relief such as dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The DCA states that the two countries agree to enhance and empower
the bilateral relations that they have established through collaborative activities in the defense sector, based on equality, mutual trust and deliberation. They are aware of the need to strengthen the amicable relationship and technical partnership that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries. The agreement also includes the principle of equality and non-interference in the countries’ domestic affairs.

The DCA enables both countries to maximize their potential and competitive advantage in areas such as cyber security and defense equipment (Alutsista) collaboration. This could advance the capacity of the Indonesian defense industry and bring the country into the global Alutsista
production chain.

“I hope the DCA will improve communication and cooperation not only between the Defense Ministries but also between the Armed Forces of the
two countries. For example, collaboration between the air force and the army, especially in training and education,” said MoD Prabowo.

In addition to the DCA signing, the two Defense Ministers discussed several issues relevant to both countries, particularly reinforcing defense partnerships. (Eka)
