Jakarta, IO – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called for the ASEAN-EU partnership to make a major contribution toward an inclusive economic recovery. He hoped this partnership can lead to policy direction that seeks to facilitate trade and investment amid risk of global recession next year.

He conveyed this during a speech at the plenary session of the ASEAN-EU 45th Anniversary Summit at the Europa Building, Brussels, Wednesday (14/12).

“Indonesia wants to emphasize that inclusive and value-added development will support the resilience of the global economy in an equitable manner. It is in this regard that Indonesia will continue to develop the downstream industry,” Jokowi said, according to setkab.go.id.

Jokowi also shared his vision on the EU Deforestation Regulation proposal, which can potentially create obstacles. According to him, only through downstreaming can Indonesia make a leap in improving the welfare of its people and encourage more inclusive development. Thus, the ASEAN-EU partnership must focus on building a greener and more sustainable future through an equitable energy transition.

“I appreciate the European Union’s support for the Bali Energy Transition Roadmap enacted during the G20 Summit last month. The ASEAN-EU partnership must mobilize financing and transfer of environmentally friendly technologies and strengthen the ecosystem for the development of new and renewable energy,” he said.

Furthermore, Jokowi emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to be part of the ASEAN-EU cooperation in an equal, mutually respectful and mutually beneficial manner for the sake of common prosperity. (un)
