Irene’s success is the cherry on top of the cake of Indonesian chess team’s victories in August. Perhaps it is because fighting in August, the month of Indonesia’s Independence, always spurs our athlete’s spirit and will to bring home gifts for the Republic’s anniversary? PB Percasi General Chairman GM Utut Adianto was elected President of FIDE Zone 3.3 (comprising 18 ASEAN and East Asia countries) in the FIDE Congress in Chennai.

The Congress also validates the claim for the WGM (Woman Grandmaster) title of Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra submitted by PB Percasi. “The decision was unanimous, there were no objections at all. Yes, there were two, three cases mentioned in the meeting concerning the validation of title claims, but none of them was related to Indonesian chess players, ”reported Dwi Ambarukmi, Indonesia’s Delegate for the FIDE Congress. “Two weeks ago, FIDE has publicly and officially listed Citra as a confirmed WGM in their website. She was the first Indonesian woman to achieve this most prestigious title for a female chess player, right after Irene Kharisma Sukandar and Medina Warda Aulia.”

And on the night of 16 August, Indonesian chess player IM Azarya Jodi Setyaki, who fought in the First Saturday Tournament in Budapest, Hungary, won a decisive victory against the host country’s GM Aczel Gergely (2497). With this win, Jodi became the tournament champion, as well earning his first GM Norm, and an additional 30.3 points in his global rating score. (rp)
