Jakarta, IO – An Iranian man named Mehran Samak was reportedly killed by security force in northern Iran while holding anti-government demonstrations and publicly celebrating the defeat of the country’s football team exit from the Qatar World Cup.
Activists said Mehran Samak was shot in the head after honking his car in Bandar Anzali on Tuesday night, reported BBC on Friday (2/12).
Many Iranians refuse to support their national football team, seeing it as representing the Islamic Republic regime. In fact, video footage from another city shows crowds cheering and dancing in the streets, as a sign of celebration for the defeat.
State-affiliated media blamed hostile forces, inside and outside of Iran, for putting pressure on the national team players as they lost 1-0 to the U.S. in the decisive match of Group B.
