As an additional token of appreciation, the Festival was also held to encourage dialogue between traditional musicians aiming to bring up innovative ideas in preserving and developing traditional music. Traditional music needs to keep up with today’s music listeners, the young people, without losing its character and authenticity. Indonesian traditional musicians are expected to regenerate the music, compose new traditional songs, and not simply await its extinction. Digital platforms provide a fresh opportunity to remap traditional music in a new digital civilization.

Another Jakarta Arts Council Music Committee member, Cholil Mahmud, the leading vocal and guitarist of Efek Rumah Kaca, added, “We hope to explore a lot more to enable musicians to earn from playing traditional music. We want the audience to feel proud and enjoy traditional tunes.”

Traditional music has been around in society for centuries. It remains living in people’s lives, as it serves as both entertainment and a form of self-disclosure that manifests into identity.

It lives and grows as a culture in communities. Traditional music offers its own aesthetic and beauty from different musical instruments, tones, rhythms, and tempos. The sound of traditional music often speaks to the soul. Life events related to birth, weddings, death and other religious and cultural ceremonies keep traditional music alive across multi-generations.
