Indonesian driver’s license to be recognized in 8 Asean countries starting June 2025

Jakarta, IO – Indonesian driver’s license (SIM) will be able to be used in eight Asean countries starting June 1, 2025. In other words, Indonesian citizens no longer need to use an international driving permit when traveling to a number of Southeast Asian countries.

The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) director for registration and identification Yusri Yunus specified that the eight countries are the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia.

According to Yusri, the implementation will be carried out after adjusting the ID card number (NIK) as SIM number in the so-called document integration, per Jawa Pos, Wed (26/6).

Previously, the plan to align SIM numbers using NIK was carried out to regulate the personal data of Indonesian citizens. Apart from that, this also aims to prevent duplicate SIM.

Yusri added that the NIK system is good because is is unique, meaning one person can only have one NIK.

“So, the point is that we will create single data. It’s best if the NIK KTP, SIM, etc can be unified under single number,” he said. (un)
