Indonesia, Vietnam agree on EEZ boundaries after 12 years

Jakarta, IO – President Joko Widodo said that negotiations concerning Indonesia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundaries with Vietnam has been agreed by both countries based on The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“After 12 years of intensive negotiations, Indonesia and Vietnam have finally concluded negotiations on the EEZ boundaries between the two countries based on UNCLOS 1982,” said Jokowi in an official statement after meeting Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the Bogor Palace on Thursday (22/12).

Meanwhile, President Nguyen said the completion of negotiations on the Indonesia-Vietnam EEZ boundary lines will benefit people from the two countries. He also expressed his support for Indonesia’s ASEAN chairmanship next year and ASEAN’s stance on South China Sea as a sea of peace and stability and to uphold freedom of navigation in line with international law and UNCLOS 1982.

“We fully support the theme of ASEAN as epicentrum of growth and we agreed that ASEAN must play a central and resilient role in the region,” said Phuc.

Jokowi and Phuc also signed three MOUs on cooperation in energy and mineral resources, counter terrorism and eradication of illegal drug trade. (rr)
