- A Papuan named the best player
The national team’s victory was even more special after captain Muhammad Iqbal Gwijangge was chosen as the best player. Iqbal is a Papuan born in Sumedang, West Java. He now plays for Bhayangkara U-16 FC, moving from Bandung Pro United. The 2022 AFF U-16 championship is his debut as captain of the team.

PSSI chairman Mochamad Iriawan said the U-16 national team would become the precursor of the future U-19 national team. “I’ve spoken with the Sports and Youth Minister that this team be developed. These players will make up the future U-19 team.” They are expected to spearhead Indonesia’s ambition to win SEA Games 2025 or 2027.
