Syaf’i suffered from poverty at the time, as his family in West Sumatra had to stop their financial support: the PRRI/Permesta Rebellion in Sumatra in 1958 cut off all relations between the Island and other locales, including Java. He had to drop out of college and work as a teacher in a small school in the District of Baturetno, Regency of Wonogiri, Central Java.

After he saved up enough money, Syaf’i resumed his studies in the Cokroaminoto University Surakarta’s Department of History and his Pre-Bachelor degree in 1964. Four years later, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Yogyakarta Institute of Pedagogy and Education (Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan – “IKIP”), now the Yogyakarta State University. He went on to get his Master’s in History in Ohio State University, and his Doctorate in the Chicago University Near East Language and Culture Program. For the latter, his graduation dissertation was titled Islam as the Basis of State: A Study of The Islamic Political Ideal as Reflected in the Constituent Assembly Debates in Indonesia.
